Hi,

This is not strictly a Win7PE issue, however I have spent sometime on reboot.pro without any luck, so I thought I might see whether someone here has a working config.

My ISO image works fine when I run it from a CD, however when I launch via Grub4Dos on a USB stick, shortly after startup I get a stop 7f.

It would be handy to also be able to run the ISO from USB so if somebody is able to do this and could share their Grub4Dos config, that would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,

you may forget to get .iso file contiguous,
There is
Utils\WinContig
for that,

I added all options to FAQ

Q: How to get SE bootable on USB - Disk - UFD (USB Flash Disk) etc. ?

No that's not the issue, the ISO boots, but then after a minute or so it BSOD's (when running from USB stick)

Gena\WriteMedia\Tutorial Gena Disk Boot
plugin provides a general way and ready tools, menu.lst etc. to boot .iso, which works also on SE
I can't find the tutorial mentioned above.

I can see the plugin in Winbuilder, which I had not noticed before, so this is an option. But I already have a process to build my USB sticks and ideally I just want to copy the ISO and edit the menu.lst myself.

Do you happen to have the menu.lst entry?

Cheers

OK I have done some more testing.

In Winbuilder there is a script 'Copy to USB device'. I have tried this script and it works. However rather than copying an ISO image to the USB drive it copies a number of folders and files.

Ideally I would like to be able to add Win7PE to a USB stick that has another project on it, and that project also has a Programs folder; so at the moment it is not possible for me to have both projects on the same USB stick.

I tried creating a folder for Win7PE and then copying all the Win7PE folders from the root, but that failed to boot with a BCD error.

From my perspective the ideal solution is to be able run Win7PE as an iso image from the USB stick, but it may be that this is not possible.

Appreciate any suggestions or confirmation that it is not possible to run Win7PE from an ISO image (as opposed to real CD media)

Cheers

That worked better than my earlier attempts. Thanks.

However I have added a couple of applications to my build and for some reason ShadowProtect does not work properly when running from a USB stick as an ISO. So in my case if Shadow is not available then it defeats the purpose of having multiple projects on the USB stick.

FWIW Shadow does run OK from a real CD and also from USB when "iso boot" is not ticked.

Hi,

Thanks for all the info.

I agree that this is a ShadowProtect issue, the Win7PE project is very good.

I have thought about this some more and it is not worth pursuing further, I can get by without having access to both projects on the one USB stick.

I have two options for using Win7PE, burn to CD or run from USB (but not as an ISO); this will do the job for me.

Cheers
