I'm experiencing constant problems with the Win10XPE project. I remember being able to build live Windows 10 environments without major drama earlier, but it seems the stability has gone downhill since then.
I am using the latest Win10XPE project.

Here's a YouTube video (https://youtu.be/pgNnIMDfF5U) of what's happening if I don't tick the "Basic Build" and only add a sprinkle of the apps I want in my live environment. It says "Switch to Admin...." and then forever gets looped on a mouse cursor going from idle to idle + hourglass.

Source media is Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC (1809 iirc), downloaded via Adguard TechBench (recommended by the first page of the project). Note that this doesn't make any difference if I use PEBakery or the WinBuilder-based builder included with the project. Attached are some of the core build settings that I'm using.

Help would be much appreciated. I'm at my wits end as to why this is failing.

Just realized that you guys probably want the build logs - unless it's something trivial that I missed, I'll attach them tomorrow.

Hi Cubeburner

the logs are always the best starting point

but can you try increasing your WinPE Cache size to something larger and/or untick 'Run ALL Programs from RAM', to test if it's related, and your Build Core plugin is showing a syntax error, it may be minor and of no consequence, but what is it?

btw, you really didn't need a minute video of a black screen with a cursor and hourglass - 5 secs would be ample, or just your description

No worries - I'll attach them to this post.

I'll try 1024MB Cache size, but I'm trying to keep the build under 4GB so I can boot this environment on machines that have less than 4GB of RAM (laptops, some desktops, etc).
I assume when WinPE boots, it's decompressing things into memory? So if I load the WIM into memory (as in, it loads ~1GB compressed), it decompresses itself to around 3GB as it loads, and the rest is used by Explorer, etc?

What exactly is that cache size and how does it relate to things?

Code: [Select]
1 syntax error detected at [Win10XPE\Core.script]

[1/1] Interface control [] must have a key (=//-) (Line 30)

Section coverage : 98% (50/51)

Funnily enough I just restored the file from the ZIP archive (Win10XPE_xxxx.zip) and that error went away... Maybe it got corrupted somehow?

btw, you really didn't need a minute video of a black screen with a cursor and hourglass - 5 secs would be ample, or just your description
Hah, I thought about that post-video recording... I was like "well, might as well provide some background info".

Tried another build with 1024MB System Cache. Still the same thing.
I'll try to do a build and boot from USB... that'll eliminate the PXE booting being the problem.

is there a reason you are using 10.0.17763.1012 in S mode - why not use newest MS release of windows 10

Building from Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC (EnterpriseS) has been proven to be a good build medium in the past.
I'll try using 1909, I guess.

2004 also works well

Alright so apparently now 1909 is booting correctly and functions with "Switch to Administrator" ticked.

However, without any ImDisk RAMDisk it seems that the system's X: boot drive (probably WinPE's Cache) drops very fast. It said about 980MB free, then I started some apps (Explorer++, normal Windows Explorer, etc) and then it went down to like 48MB free and ended up on 0 bytes out of 2.7MB, with applications saying "There is no space left on the disk". I'm doing a build with the RAMDisk enabled and "Switch to administrator" not ticked.

Sorry, that should read "I'm now doing a build" instead of "I'm doing a build".
