I haven't tried Win7PE SE before, but I tried the latest release (2016-06-16), and it only boots to a blank desktop (wallpaper, but no icons, taskbar, etc).  Yes, it does boot correctly under emulation, so it seems to be a compatibility problem with real PC(s).  Anyone else had this problem?

Are there old releases of Win7PE SE that I could try?  I can't find any :(

I'd really like to get Win7PE SE working, as it seems to be the only WinBuilder project that supports BitLocker.  I've also used Win8.1SE for a while, and that works great (but sadly won't open registry hives of Win 7 PCs, plus of course SFC won't work, so not much use for my needs).

No worries on my side in Virtual machine or real PC.
I guess it is a driver problem.

 Why should these 3 things not work with Win8 or 10PESE?

2 things, not 3 :) since BitLocker works on Win8.1SE but is of no use due to the other 2 not working with Win7 installations.

I can only report that I found running Win 8.1 SFC on a Win 7 installation doesn't work properly or at all (I forget which).  I assume Microsoft never worried about this use case (there are differences between different Windows version, and there is no special reason why it should be backwards compatible unless they put effort into making it so).

I can only report that Win 8.1 RegEdit fails to open most Win 7 registry hives.  Again, I assume Microsoft never worried about this use case, etc.

I had wondered.  I'll try disabling Drivers (I think it included some by default), and see if that helps...

A Screenshot of Win10pese, Bitlocker, load windows 7 registry hive and sfc worked without surprise here !
For the test, I have intentionally altered Win7 kernel32.dll and it has well repaired it.
Note that for sfc, I believe you must have the same architecture.

Sadly it made no difference.  Win7PE SE still boots to an empty desktop screen (wallpaper only).

ChrisR, thanks for the suggestion of Win10PE-SE, it works very well.  I didn't think someone would have done such a good Win10-based bootable CD yet.

I also installed the latest Win7PE-SE... and it still gets stuck at a blank desktop with a mouse pointer.  Strange that the Win10 works better (as I'd have thought the Win7 one would have had more time to be tested well).
