Hi

I realized that the boot.wim file in Windows PE is a file containing two volume images:

The first contains the files that allow to start the Windows PE/RE operating system that is used to prepare a computer for Windows installation mounting and initializing the Microsoft Windows Setup volume image.

The second contains the files that allow to install Windows using the files on the installation media. In addition this volume image has the boot flag.

That is right?

Thanks

Bye

explain "Tasks"

I have not seen a "Boot.wim" with two volume images..

Based on your posts in several forums - you need to do a lot of research about the topic of your interest..
As you always ask, but never reads...

Your understanding is not written in a step by step guide..
Nor do you usually seem to understand the steps when they are given to you...

Honestly, And I mean No Offense to you, but you are surely way over your head in this forum...

The first question about this was made 2009, that's what I call persistence  :great:

First index is applied to the boot drive, if you run setup from inside a full windows.
It's extracted to \$WINDOWS.~BT and will be booted the next reboot.

The Second index is used when booting form ISO/CD/DVD.

JFX, thanks for reminding us (must admit I didn't remember that either).

Now, it will only be another few hours I guess, before KYHI has sobered up as well

Just kidding KYHI, I hope you can take a joke. Though I agree with you on the "in over your head" part!!!

I guess we're all happy now...

So the Microsoft Windows PE volume image of the boot.wim file contains files that are used to start a full installation of Windows via LAN or an upgrade of Windows from an existing system.

While the Microsoft Windows Setup volume image (having the boot flag) of the boot.wim file contains files that are used to start a full installation of Windows from a physical media containig the Windows Setup Media files that allow to start this second volume image.

Right?

Thanks

I was under the impression
that a WIM file contained INDEXES and IMAGES
And a HDD contained VOLUMES

for those looking to follow along with this conversation and to find out what the OP wants to do as the end result of this line of questioning,,
http://www.tenforums.com/installation-setup/49185-difference-between-microsoft-windows-pe-microsoft-windows-setu.html

he is wanted to know the difference between the Standard PE Image (on CD) versus the PE Image that contains Windows Setup (on DVD)
