Recuva : http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Continued from :
http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=522.msg7876#msg7876
BUT, I would like to report something weird. The last PE I made & used was built before GENA was born, so ...

I had a simple Recuva script to extract the portable Recuva (the zip file from the piriform site) & create a shortcut to the exe. It worked OK before.
Now I just built a new PE with Gena 2013.02.19 - and I find recuva does not work. When I run recuva.exe, I can see it in task manager but no user UI appears. I thought I had messed up the script, and kept on using the PE, then after about 10 minutes the recuva UI appeared !
I tried to run recuva using :
- my script.
- the 'official' gena recuva script with the embedded recuva.
- portable recuva from my hdd.
same problem.

They all run OK with my previous PE.
btw, I have no network related components in either of my PEs. It may have something to do with recuva 'phoning home', there is a long thread on the piriform forum about this.

Process Monitor results in BSOD 24, tried on two systems.

But, I found out this :
- started recuva
- started process explorer
- killed this service "X:\i386\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs  (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time)"
- recuva UI appears immediately

Hi gbrao,

as I wrote before, things start smoothly here on my tests (Source XPSP3x86Enu), btw, out of topic I updated IE 08  ..

I also check with process explorer, W32Time is there, but does not have any bad side effect here...

Process Monitor results in BSOD 24, tried on two systems.
This also do not happen here !! maybe a title change "Recuve and Proces Monitor problems..."

shortly:
currently I can not reproduce your troubles gbrao,
probably there is something different in between , I hope you can figure out

thanks, still as helpful as ever i see ...

btw : why aren't gena builds also mirrored on, say, mediafire ? and you haven't told me (us?) what 'gena' stands for.

hehe, your "old pc" is my girlfriends "new pc"

*
since no mirror required  we give "direct" golden link, without advertisements, blabla seconds etc.   :great:
 who would need more
aside,
distributing pe build on such places have high potential to cause bad reputations naming warez by regular users,
even experience showed us,
some  "unproductive sabotagers" ( idiots ) used this potential to sabotage distributions
which Win7PESE faced in the past http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=327.0
at that times, Win7PESE had mirror, after "troubles" from "idiots",
not anymore    :great:

*
there was a topic about "Gena" name .. could not find now .. I feel we should stick such topic.... shortly it is a nice good name
so far I could find forum name topic http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=16.0

when you tested recuva + ie, were you using wimboot or iso.

btw, i noticed when i run "recuva /debug" i do not have the problem mentioned in the op.

and, i'm not the first to have process monitor bsod with a wimboot xp pe.

Not sure if Recuva problem is WinPE related. It tooks sometimes ~ 30 seconds here on my main system (Win7x64 on SSD)

WimBoot + Process Monitor don't get along with each other.
Just a matter of time until it goes BSoD.

i used 'create iso' rather than 'wimboot' and both recuva & process monitor work ok !

^ recuva has a nasty habit of calling 'home' the first time it is run, it actually calls verisign it seems. piriform forum has a thread.

yes I was testing with CreateISO, as I always do
I could not guess WimBoot , JFX knows better

what happens with FileDisk - RegMon (latest versions should be available on somewhere internet ) with WimBoot,
which together can be used instead of Procmon tasks ???

ps: reminding: "Sysinternals Suite" have FileDisk - RegMon options if files provided manually

+
I can add /Debug switch to recuva shortcuts if that is a fix , or not  !!!!! ,
JFX maybe you can test with your 30 seconds case ??

ps: sorry JFX, asking you too much, but I even should not be around without having time...... doing best of I can :turtle:

i found recuva.exe kept looking for a file system32\CatRoot2\dberr.txt
Quote
151   12:13:49 PM   Recuva.exe:1420   OPEN   X:\i386\System32\CatRoot2\dberr.txt   PATH NOT FOUND   Options: OpenIf  Access: 0012019F
152   12:13:54 PM   Recuva.exe:1420   OPEN   X:\i386\System32\CatRoot2\dberr.txt   PATH NOT FOUND   Options: OpenIf  Access: 0012019F
153   12:13:59 PM   Recuva.exe:1420   OPEN   X:\i386\System32\CatRoot2\dberr.txt   PATH NOT FOUND   Options: OpenIf  Access: 0012019F
...

as soon as i created the folder CatRoot2, it began writing to it :
Quote
CatalogDB: 12:16:14 PM 2013-02-24: WAITSVC: Calling StartService():  CryptSvc
CatalogDB: 12:16:19 PM 2013-02-24: WAITSVC: Calling StartService():  CryptSvc
CatalogDB: 12:16:24 PM 2013-02-24: WAITSVC: Calling StartService():  CryptSvc
...

then i found svchost ( i think ) looking for esent.dll.

net result, if i only include esent.dll, recuva works ok in a wimboot pe with ie (edit ie6).
but, that does not explain why the 'create iso' version works even without the dll.

EDIT : with ie8 these are needed too : certcli.dll, sensapi.dll.

I've uploaded an updated version of the plugin to the Gena server. I've added the esent.dll dependency and added the newer program version.

Regards,
Galapo.
