build machine Lenovo Laptop
os Win7 x64
build source Win7 x86 disc (not patched)
project Win7PE-SE

I have recently successfully built a Win7PE-SE iso. Everthing works fine when played in vmware.
When I use any of the copy to usb scripts I lose all other programs icons. I do have the basic
explorer, IE, PeNetwork and other icons. I lose all others. I'v tried both Write to Media
scripts - copy to usbbdevice and copy to usb device BCD Boot Mgr with the same results.
There is also a warning triangle on the desktop stating this fact. Any ideas? The build only has the
source and IE and IE Flash changed from its original download condition.

I have found out that the "y" drive does not mount. The only drives seen in explorer are ramdrive "b" hard drive "c" cd drive "e" and the "x" drive.
Only the programs and there icons are seen that are i the "x" drive. I dont see the iso mounted as any drive. I have checked and the name of the iso is correct.
I didnt find the file cdusb.y on the root of the usb drive. I added it manually with no change to the results. Please can someone help me.

Thanks
Carfan

Hi carfan,

I'm not at home this week and I do not have much time.
if you are using the latest version 20121026
Can you watch and share MountPEMedia.log in %temp% folder (x:\windows\temp or B:\temp)
it should give some informations.

There is not, in fact, icon on the programs of drive Y: if this drive is not mounted before.
and you should have CdUsb.y at the root of your Usb drive (copied from TargetDir) without having to create it manually.
the concern is to see why the drive Y: is not mounted.

Yes I an using version 20121026. The Y drive was being mounted in Virtual mode but not during an actual
USB device boot. I changed the Copy to USB Device script from Format Tools - bootice to HpUSB and
Write MBR Tools - bootice to GrubInstall and everything works great. The Y drive is visible now in explorer
and the icons and programs are working with the USB boot device. There must be a problem with the other settings. I did look into the iso from the built and did see the CdUsb.y file. Also, I checked the name of the iso and it did match the Win7PESE.ini file name. I tried with the bootice settings with both the Use .ISO Boot checked and unchecked with the same no Y drive mount problem.

If you need to see a build log of something please let me know.

Thanks
Carfan

Well, I thought I had it figured out - ran build again - did not change anything - now, no mount y drive - back to square 1.
What and where do I post logs so we can help debug this???

You can activate "Create support log" in Main Configuration.
Then, after build, you can share log_2012...Win7PESE_Support.7z on mediafire, zshare or other.
If you can share also MountPEMedia.log in PE Temp folder (x:\windows\temp).
For info, you need 10 posts to be able to attach a file directly (spam protection).

I haven't had time to do the log yet however, I have noticed that the failure to mount the y drive is directly related to the usb inactivity time during usb boot.
With the same usb drive on machines that will boot with less than 10 seconds of usb drive light inactivity during the boot process every thing works - y drive mounts. Using the same usb drive on a different machine or even a different usb port on the same as the good test, if the usb light has more than 30 seconds
of read inactivity during the boot process the y drive will not mount. The error message states this 30 seconds no usb response as a possiblity of the failure to mount.
Is 30 seconds a default timeout and can it be increased???ks

Thanks

is your usb ntfs formatted ?
and
as asked earlier:
after Win7PESE boots when "y drive not mount" do you have access to this usb-disk on explorer ?

Yes it is formatted in NTFS and no there isn't a drive letter in explorer for the usb drive.
The Win7PESE warning text also doesn't list the usb drive either.

Thanks

So bootup can not find/install usb disk at all.....
Hence, increasing 30 sec. default to 60 - 90 etc. will not help.....

To be sure,
IF you can test,
check with disk management to see if there is a drive that does not have a assigned letter ??

Similar* happens (happened) to me with NTFS here too,
Sometimes my windows can not mount NTFS ufd disks,
(asking requires restart when first plugged in, I guess I had cheated with unplug and plug, and since I use same windows all the time.. ;) )
and mostly, when I say "unplug" it complains about activity on disk so not available to unplug.....
(XP32 and 64, nt5x, I do not use W7 around.... so similar* ;))

It was only annoying, but not critical, but I like things run smooth,
so I revert back my ufd disks to FAT32 long time ago, all my troubles gone, did not test changing usb ports with ntfs which seem to help you.

Shortly:
try Fat32, see if it also helps there with W7 - Win7PESE on your tests, with different usb ports ?

Sounds good. I'll reformat with fat32 and try again.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback result
I feel (only optimism) we figure out another long term mystery at last

Let us know more results, since you seem to face this frequently with the chance of testing with different hardwares....

I tested on different pc's yesterday with good results. I think now I'll add more programs and drivers, increase the build size and see what happens.
Since I'm going to try on several different platforms I am interested in adding lan and wlan drivers. I might need some help with this. I am used to adding drivers with driverpacks to UBCD4Win which is pretty much automatic. Going to work on the build after a couple of days rest.

Thanks

Thanks for Good Feedback carfran,
nice to see mystery solved  :great: (I hope )
Chris will probably make update on plugin to advice all to use FAT32

For drivers, check
Win7PESE\Drivers\"Driver Integration"
Also
Win7PESE\Components\"PE Network" -> Driver option here (x86 Driver:.... x64 Drivers:....)

They are quite automatic

It is nice to see UBCD4Win / BartPE user around ( like most of us around ),
As an experienced PE1x user, I hope you test Gena (Meal) http://gena.cwcodes.net/Compressed/ and share your impressions http://theoven.org/index.php?board=2.0 too

See You

Thank you both for the resolution of this concern
I never had this problem with my USB keys or USB disks always formatted in NTFS, good to know.

Chris will probably make update on plugin to advice all to use FAT32
Currently the advice on the interface or message is the opposite, please use NTFS (recommended) or FAT32.
Maybe add a text as :
In case of problems with your Usb, Disk, formatted in NTFS try with FAT32.
or reverse advice, please use FAT32 (recommended) or NTFS, as suggested.

Integrated drivers no problem. Now I want to shake things up a bit. I want to autostart driver packs install and after it's finished start penetwork.
I've checked the box in the script driver package installer to auto start. I want to change what runs which is (driver from win7 host os) to dpnist packs install (Dpinstl.exe /p. "Y:\DriverPacks" /s).
Then after the dpinst is done running I want to autostart penetwork. Can someone help me make these changes?

Thanks

Found my problem with dpinstl auto start no parameters box error in the driver package installer script.
TXTAddLine,"%TargetDir%\windows\system32\autorun.cmd","dpinstL.exe /p #$q%CDDrive%\%pTextRootFolder%#$q /s","Append"
needs to be changed to
TXTAddLine,"%TargetDir%\windows\system32\autorun.cmd","dpinstL.exe /p:%CDDrive%\%pTextRootFolder% /s","Append"

Now I just need help delaying the start of penetconfig untill dpinstl finishes.
