I've been using Winbuilder for a little while now with great success. However, I've been testing it out on a Surface Pro 3 and Dell Venue and both have a common odd problem.

I'll boot off the thumb drive built with 8.1SE, it loads the Apps screen, and then it loses all input as if the USB Port is dead. Chipset drivers are integrated and the Renew USB3 script is enabled. It's tough to troubleshoot, as I have no means of interacting with the OS at this point. A mouse hooked up to the Dell's dock stays lit until the Windows logo screen, then goes dead.

Have tried with both 8.1 x86 and x64 as the source. Since it's common to both tablets, is there something simple I'm overlooking?

Have you tried injecting the full Venue driver cab file from the Dell website in the driver integration section?

They can be found here just scroll down the page a bit: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/2065.dell-command-deploy-driver-packs-for-enterprise-client-os-deployment

I'd like to know if this solves the issue as we have 15 venue's to build tomorrow and if win8.1se doesn't work, we're going to be stuffed :(

Let me know how you get on, or if you find any resolution...

Cheers

Just tested this on my latitude 10 and it seemed to work ok (USB drives working/keyboard/mouse etc.) so I can only imagine it's a driver issue?

Really annoying, all the trouble with USB3 in PE. it seems the same with Windows To-Go and I guess also a driver issue.

I saw this page, if it can help:
Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers: http://plugable.com/2012/12/01/windows-8-and-intel-usb-3-0-host-controllers/comment-page-4
Here is the latest drivers Win7 drivers prepared for Win8 (the orginal inf file are renamed in .inf.org).

Tests I've done so far based on everyone's suggestions:

1) The original build was with the Venue 11 driver CAB from Dell extracted to the Driver Integration folder - same problem with dead USB port.
2) I tried Integrating the modified Intel driver that ChrisR posted - same problem.
3) I did a build using the "PE in RAM" option in Main Configuration instead of "OS in RAM" - that worked, USB port functional - though the environment seemed really buggy - apps hanging.

The tooltip says PE in RAM doesn't load "Software and Drivers from install.wim". Perhaps this method is not loading a driver that's causing the problem.

Thanks for testing and feedback
Good to know that it works in PE mode  Is it for both Surface Pro 3 and Dell Venue?

About the tooltip:
In PE mode, SYSTEM, DEFAULT, COMPONENTS, SAM, SECURITY,... hives are those of boot.wim but SOFTWARE and DRIVERS are those of install.wim
In OS mode, all hives are from install.wim.
So following your tests, I guess something related with SYSTEM hive.
Unfortunately, I do not have the hardware to test further. My external USB3 disk has always worked, for now!

Like you, I'm not really satisfied with the "PE mode" Environment.
For the PE mode, I personally prefer to use Win8pese instead of Win8.1Se. It may be better for you with your equipment or at least to test it.

If you have time for another test with Win8.1SE OS mode
In Tweaks\Power Options, I added, end of September, an option to "Disable USB Selective suspend" that can possibly help.
The Power Options v2 plugin is on server http://win81se.cwcodes.net/Projects/Win8.1SE/Tweaks/PowerOptions.script

I can confirm PE mode works on the Surface Pro 3 as well.

I did a build in OS mode with the "Disable USB Selective suspend" option enabled and the problem persisted.

In the PE mode, both devices are loading "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)" as the driver for the USB Controller.

I'll keep playing around with this on my end.

The fact that your USB3 ports work with the PE build type but NOT with "OS in RAm" is a good track to follow
There's probably something related with install.wim system hive (in PE mode, the system registry comes from boot.wim)

If you could make an additional test with the OS Mode,
I prepared a plugin to replace DriverDatabase in the system hive by that of boot.wim.
To add in build folder
* 2-OSSystemHiveTest.script (5.45 kB - downloaded 139 times.)

Awesome, that did it. Rebuilt in OS Mode with the test script enabled and it's working on both the Dell and Surface.

Does this affect the availability of drivers added via the Driver Integration plugin? The Dell's network drivers loaded, so it seems like the driver integration still works.

Good new, happy to have found together  :great:
Thank you for your patience, your tests and for seeing that it works in PE Mode

However, Given the number of Internet pagessss about problems, between USB 3 and Windows 8/8.1, all is not won

Driver integration uses Dism /Add-Driver, it will continue to operate without worries
By cons, I have to look at the Audio, Original display drivers and Original NET drivers plugins.
These plugins are written by thinking that the registry is already there.
I'll start tonight, I'm on vacation next week.

I think it's good  At least I hope
Extracting the registry for Audio, Original display and Original NET drivers plugins was a painful and boring task  :suda:. it's done, it should be more consistent now.
I also updated the Original NET drivers to be compatible with Win8pese.

Win8.1SE use Drivers hive from boot.wim, now and the OS build use the System DriverDatabase registry in addition.
So They are now on full relation with the Driver Store
The latest plugins are on server.

If you have time to do a test with your tablets and their USB3 ports.
It's been a while since I have not updated the packages, if time permits, I'll maybe do it tonight.

I removed the "2-OSSystemHiveTest.script" from my project and did a "Recommended" download of all the updates, rebuilt, and can confirm that it is working on the Dell Venue - haven't gotten a Surface Pro 3 back yet to test.

Very much appreciate all the work on this.

I did a test on Surface Pro 3 and cannot get it to work.
Tested in OS mode and updated all the scripts.

USB mouse does not work. Also tested on a USB hub, no go

Those are from surface pro 3 winre.wim. I don't think they are in boot .wim on normal installation media.

Thanks SIW2 for both drivers  Good to know it works with tablets Dell Venue, latitude 10, surface pro 3
May be well to make a plugin for users.
