Update the core version of WinPE for new hardwares and drivers.
UI improvements or applications' updates are not necessary.

But if setup.exe(Windows Installer), diskpart or something tools had bug fixes,  it is also worth to update.

And some one who add more features to make PE as RAMOS to use,  the maybe update to new version.

(Make a new version PE is cheap,  just change the ISO to build if something is not working, just use old one.)

new Windows version goes a little beyond just adding functionnalities, check here for example to see what is fixed per version.

all i have ticked is switch to admin on the build core page - i always ask - what am i missing or doing wrong

there are no new features in PE with 20H2 compared to 20H1 - other then a mess of registry errors

If the project author ChrisR is not bothered about it, I'm certainly not going to be!

this is on 1809 - i went back to that in order to get icons on the taskbar
19041.610
as requested - this is running Win10XPE_2020-11-01 on windows 10 64bit - laptop running 2004 19041.610 - iso built and written to USB stick using rufus  3.12p

as said build without switch to admin ticked works perfectly - with switch to admin i finish with a black screen with mouse pointer - screens show but then build fails - have build the iso a couple of times to be sure it was not a bad build or burn to the usb

i am not sure what switch to admin does or if i need it - i want to run one program as an admin - total commander - but cannot see how to achieve that at the moment - i believe its achieved by a reg value - am looking at that but have had no success at importing reg files in the past - that said i believe the ones i have tried [text sizes] need a reboot to change and thats not possible

Hi

thanks for the extra info

I never have a use for Admin, so never test for myself, not sure it helps much but I can test Win10XPE_2020-11-01 back to 19H1  18362.30 x64

with basic build checked (for speed) and switch to admin on, for me it boots to a desktop with working taskbar icons (clicking yes to Admin)
tested in a VM, Hopefully someone else will have a suggestion.

Also, I have not had a prob with taskbar icons - assuming apps are Run From RAM checkboxed in any of the builds

thanks - will run a basic build later - if admin works for you then must be something i have wrong - as to taskbar icons - they stopped working in 2004 for me - will look at that again - its no big deal to have to use 1809 but would be nice to use the later builds [possibly?]

Hi

just checked with Win10XPE_2020-11-01 and 20H1 and Admin and taskbar icons, and all seems OK for me, not bothering with 20H2.
know it doesn't help much, but good to know it can work for some I guess.

btw can't see it mattering but what lang iso are you using?

I had tested "Switch to Admin" before the release and it looked good.
However, I only tested it with the Techbench Original ISO 19041.508.
With the last Preview 19041.610, I don't know! I have only tested the standard build, just to see and without trying to go further.

If it's good for you with 20H1, keep it, without bothering with 20H2

It is not possible (or no longer possible) to Pin Applications from a Removable Media
It is not a PinUtil limitation, it is by concept in Windows, to avoid pinning applications that might be missing.
I found a trick to bypass the Windows limitation and be able to pin Apps from the removable drive Y:\Programs
It will be possible to pin your browser or others even with "Run From USB"
I'm working on it, for the next version, soon

Win10XPE_2020-11-20 update

Bypass the Windows Limitation to be able to Pin Apps from the Removable Drive Y:\Programs
For info, Hives from Install.wim are now loaded into Src_Software, Src_System,... instead of Tmp_Install_Software, Tmp_Install_System,... and other small cosmetic changes

PowerShell Core: Updated link to 7.1.0
Q-Dir: Updated to v8.9.7
Macrium Reflect: Updated to v7.3.5321
AOMEI Backupper: Change the Check Version and Updated to v6.2.0
AOMEI Partition Assistant: Change the Check Version and Updated to v9.0.0
HWinfo: Updated to v6.34
Mega Optional Application Download: Updated 2020.11.19

If needed, the project is also available on GitHub/ChrisRfr/Win10XPE, divided into 2 parts

Big smile from me, I prefer a clear desktop and just my important apps on the taskbar, tested and works great, thanks

Thanks, ChrisR.
Useful update.

Excerpt from the new pecmd.ini:
Code: [Select]
PinUtil must be launched after Explorer. To bypass Windows restrictions, use symbolic links for programs on Y: removable drive
IFEX B:\,IFEX Y:\Programs\,EXEC =@%WinDir%\System32\Cmd.exe /C Mklink /D B:\Programs Y:\Programs

@ericgl Yes with also AddPin macro to Pin from symbolic links on B:\Programs.
Imdisk Ramdisk is required, I had previously tried it on X: but mklink didn't work.
Hoping MS doesn't change it too quickly, again and again. Silence is golden.

For those who have already downloaded, Mega Optional Application Download has been updated due to a bug and Rufus has been updated to v3.13.

If you try to make X:\ be 8Gb,  128Gb,...  what size is above 4Gb,
The symbol link works on X:\.

Good to know, is it about size > 4Gb or related to the WES8 fbwf driver ?
I use the windows 10 fbwf embedded driver, limited to 4 Gb and it does not work on X:
But it works fine through B: Ramdisk. It is good to be able to pin Apps again from Y: removable drive

Yes, it needs the WES8 fbwf driver. windows 10 fbwf embedded driver has lots of limition, and max size is 4095.
