I have successfully created a  boot thumb drive with a number of portable applications with app shortcuts. However, one application ( easus partition master is not working .
Being new to this area, I will do my best to describe the situation. Fist off I do get an icon on the booted desktop fron the thumb drive. As with all app icons the
shortcut points to the Y: drive.  Files on the Y: drive all appear to be there as expected, but even trying to start the executable gives nothing. However, an inteesting opservation is that this ecutable
does work if started from the booted WinPE thumb drive programs directory. It may be that the partition manager needs a drive that can be written to, like the booted thumb drive, and apparently teh Y: drive appears to to be filled exactly
to capacity with no free space. How to solve this ? Any way to create shortcut on the desktop to the thumb drive directory where this progran is asso stored rather than the directory on the Y: drive? Any help on this would be very much appreciated as
I am very new to all this.

As a new user, It is bad behaviour you jump from trouble to trouble without solving 1st
http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=1954

More Important, I advice you find "FAQ & Tutorials" section, and check "FAQ topic" and other tutorial topics.

This way you find solutions for your 1st and 2nd post topics.

I have read over the tutorials and FAQs as you recommended. As I originally stated I have been able to get a bootable rescue disk with a number portable apps with working shortcuts  to start . My problem is that, while I can get partition master to work if  I click on the  executable using explorer on my physical thumb drive. My problem appears to be that the shortcuts all point to the Y: disk, which is a read only virtual drive. My thumb drive is labled as H:. See attached file. According to the   online tutorial Y: should be my physical thumb drive media (see attachment). Bottom line-- if I could  get shortcuts to point to my physical thumb drive, my problem would be solved.

Hi
After much study I have concluded that my problem is nowhere to be found in te references given. The problem I  described in earlier posts is on my state of the art computer will very recent components  (intel skylake CPU and motherboard) with 3 bootable hard drives and a couple of large storage drives.  As an experiment, I tried the SAME  flash drive on another 4 year old computer at home and it works perfectly.Tried with another brand flash drive, same result. of Conclusion-my builds seem to be computer HARDWARE dependent. In the case of the older computer, the booted  flash drive  is labeled as H: with the shortcuts on the desktop to the apps are pointing to a virtual Y: drive. New computer-booted flash drive in explorer for the flash drive is labeled as  Y: and shortcuts on desktop  are pointing to virtual drive H:.

If you are using this on a new system, then you also probably have plenty of RAM. You could just opt to have all programs loaded to RAM and do away totally with running them from CD/iso image.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it and as before all apps are working, with the exception of partition master. However, they do seem to load and run fasterr. Regarding partition master-I noticed in some posts  that  some programs, such as antivirus etc. require the use of runscanner. Finally a possible solution! Right clicking the icon for partition  master on the desktop and choosing  "run using runscanner" did the trick. Not entirely sure why this works for partition master, but it did. Perhaps you could enlighten me in this regard.

May i ask what do you meant by "virtual drive" ?. Usually there will be a x: partition which is a virtual ramdrive created by the PE. Even with a bare-born PE, there will be a X: partition where the compressed file system inside the boot.wim is expanded by the bootmgr.

Please try these steps.. (This is what i do in my builds to make sure all apps will run from RAM).

1- Disable assigning "y:" to usb.

Go to build-->cddrive plugin and click on "disable plugin and reset to default" option.

2- Disable imdisk plugin.

Deselect Tweaks-->imdisk plugin.

ila_rendered

3- Manually set all your apps to run from RAM.

ila_rendered

4- Deselect all options that you don't need.

Even if your system has plenty of RAM, the PE will run better if the footprint is small. You can disable any unnecessary components and apps to reduce the PE footprint thus reducing it's resource requirement- for example, if you don't need bitlocker support or directx, disable it from components section.

I would also recommend Partition Wizard which is my preferred partitioning tool.

(right click and choose 'save as' to download)

Plugin download  http://yomi.cwcodes.net/Yomi/AppsGS/HD%20Tasks/Partition%20Wizard%20Free.Script

Plugn container (contains program files) http://yomi.cwcodes.net/Yomi/AppsGS/HD%20Tasks/Partition%20Wizard%20Free_File.Script
