I use the recovery environment in Win7PE 64 bits. System Recovery in the System Tools menu.
This works great to restore a Windows backup system image when the partitions on the target disk are available.

But when i use an empty drive without any partitions and use the checkbox "Format and repartition disks" it does not work.

The error is:  "The system image restore failed. Error details: The specified object was not found. (0x80042308)"

When i use the original Windows 7 installation disk to boot it does work. In Win7PE I am also ale to recreate the partitions manualy (using the disk management gui or using diskpart command line). After the manual recreation of the partitions i am able to restore the image.

It looks like there is something missing when recenv.exe tries to create and format the disks.

VSS is working fine. "vssadmin list volumes" does not produces errors.

Hi trmpluy,

I have noted but I have no time to test it now.
I keep it for a bit later.
If you have more time, in a first step, you should be able to make a capture with Procmon and look at the "file not found". If there are files missing!

Thanks for reporting

It went out of my memory, I was away on other things and I still have not tested, lack of free time also.
Thank you to relaunch it

Hi ChrisR

It could be the disabled firewall service which is causing the issues. Turning on firewall might worth a try.

The firewall tip was a good possibility but a ran in to the firewall problem before and fixed it (the firewall service is running). The problem has something to do with the disk partitioning. Any other tip ?

I made an attempt but I give up for now, sorry.
The Windows system restore is really too picky for me, unreliable and without compression, it gives me headaches.
In Win7pese or WinRE, I have no success for recognize the system image previously made on my external hard drive:
Windows cannot find a system image...
I do not have time currently to look further, for hours, I hope someone else can help.
To enable Firewall, there is a shortcut "Firewall Enable " in System tools. It seems, indeed, required to search for a system image on the Network.

Otherwise, It is probably best to look at an alternative: Acronis, Macrium, Easeus,... They do the job really much better but without managing the windows vhdx files.

Good luck
