Hi Everyone,

If you have attempted to access the forum the last couple of days, you will have noticed that it was down. That was because the hosting provided disabled http access due to extended high CPU that broke terms of service.

In the first two days of December, there were 200,000 hits to the forum. This is about how many hits there are normally for a whole month. Obviously, the intense spike in hits led to the high cpu usage.

I've made a few tweaks to the satisfaction of the host, and hopefully we're good for a while longer.

Regards,
Galapo.

Hi Everyone,

We had a repeat.  :frusty:

At the time of this post, only I have access to the forum. But I am anticipating that the tweak I have made will be an improvement and the host will grant access again.

Regards,
Galapo.

TheOven was a topic on another site..
And I mentioned all the hits at once from China effecting the Terms Of Service..

And that Admin's Response

We had similar with our sites last week, it was quickly sorted with a cloudflare firewall rule once I'd worked out where is was originating.

Galapo also adds rules ,
but there is always a new event (a new way of blabla) after some months ! ...
and also forum has increasing number of clicks each year ...

Half glass still full,
+ Only stable solution,  Hopefully, we will split theoven and cwcodes hosting so when theoven down cwcodes continue working
---> downloads/links continue working
(
requires Galapo have free time which seems very low these days, but this is top priority
I also made some small search during the offline period and figure out cloudflare might be a good solution for theoven, Galapo need to inspect ...
)
Bonus: during split I hope we will probably have new/updated forum engine that will prevent "connection not secure" warning on browsers.

+ And I will have some work to save (backup) some html copy of topics to cwcodes (tutorial, project primary topics etc.)
---> info continue available
(there is plugin for that goal I wrote some years ago, I need to improve and update ........  )
Edit:
I backup theoven to save information on my pc, and in case of shutdown to easily upload to cwcodes or any other place
(~7 GB uncompressed - ~3 GB 7z compressed)
It will be safer and easier to have a ~ monthly forum backup (online but without any login) automatically at cwcodes in future
---> this way information keeps available when forum down again...

+ For now I made some work to use download/compare ( D/C) buttons on plugins operational if server goes offline again
(or if someone likes to use plugins with server-offline mode ;))
---> Done during the offline period , I will update relevant plugins soon and will be available with the next package.
Edit:
Relevant Plugins updated
Proxy Settings + WinHTTP : Lancelot Reply 1 http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=2673.msg36691#msg36691
also already existed feature introduced for regular users here:
Update Project (Exact and Secure) : Lancelot Reply 1 http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=3073.msg36694#msg36694

+ Also during the offline period I backup all cwcodes, an updated backup at hand always good

That was a long downtime. Any way to post on social media or other forums news about forum recovery status next time this happens?

My apologies for the long downtime. I have been extremely busy at work due to the pandemic and just could not get time to look into the issue.

Again, my hosting account consumed too many CPU resourses, again with respect to the forum. As before, it was due to multiple simultaneous connections from the same IP addresses, presumably leeching the entire forum.

In the past I have been able to implement various optimisations to lower CPU resources. This time there was none further that I could make.

So unfortunately the only thing left up my sleeve was to disallow guests from accessing the forum. Now you have to log in to view the forum. Hopefully this will prevent the mass leeching that has brought the forum down a number of times.

Regards,
Galpao.

Ps. I do not have any social media accounts.

Hi Galapo,

Just to inform:
I see
49 Guests, 8 Users
at the moment....

Since Login required, I do not know how there can exist 49 Guest looking at topics ! since there should be only "Registration Agreement" for Guests now...

Ps: At the moment site is slow to me, but maybe trouble on my side, not sure ....

Maybe this is related to troubles behind site down ....

only informing...

Yes, that's interesting. They appear to be viewing topics, although when I test by logging out I can't view any topics as such.

So maybe it is a seach bot (eg Google). I think I have still allowed a couple of them.

The site speed seems as normal to me.

Regards,
Galapo.

Hi

Yes same for me in UK, 54 guests but if I log out I can't view topics without re-logging in
and speed seems normal
