Hi

Having issue with using wireless network with WIN10XPE

Built fine, drivers added for my wireless adapter etc

When I open PE Network Manager, select my wireless adapter and click Start I get error below

"An error occurred while starting the "Native WiFi Filter" driver! The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

Sure I remember similar error from while back, but can't find or remember solution

Any thoughts please

Thanks

Just so you know, by default, pre-installation and recovery environments do not support wireless network connectivity.  I am not sure if wWin10XPE or Win10PESE is able to somehow bypass this, but I have never gotten wireless to work, so I assume that the limitation is still present.

However the drivers for wireless adapters ARE included in a Windows Install ISO and are added during the build process.  This is why the "Networking" and "Drivers" plugins exist in PESE...  XPE has its own version of these plugins to do the same thing...

This is the PESE thread, there is an XPE specific thread located here: http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=2488.0

And in a manual creation of PE using ADK and winre.wim as source then wireless works perfectly fine, as it does in Win10PESE

Here wifi does not work only when WinXshell is chosen instead of Explorer.

Can we possibly get wireless networking working please?   I have tested again in latest release using 1709 source

I get error of "An error occurred while starting the 'Native WiFi Filter" driver! Invalid window handle" from PE Network trying to "Start WiFi"

If I do a manual build of PE using ADK and WINRE as source then Wi-Fi works fine as does PE Network to manage it, I am adding exact same driver files for my wi-fi adapter as I am using in XPE

I have my wireless card drivers added to build and it appears fine in device manager

Anything I can do to test, or if I have missed something obvious please let me know

@Oscar - This is using Explorer as shell not WinXShell

Thank you

Yes it shows up in PE Network Manager

If I then go to the WiFi tab and click Start WiFi I get error message as posted

The wifi works here too. It seems to be the case for most.
The Wlansvc service and the "Native Wifi filter" starts normally here, with "Network addition" enabled or not.
No idea what's wrong for you and I don't know how to help without being able to reproduce.

If it is not the case, tries with a basic building and without any additions, except your Wlan drivers.
You can look also at PENMDebug.txt in %temp% folder if there is information that can help.

Very odd then as this is a build using latest XPE download (unmodified) and the 1809 source files (Win10_1809_EnglishInternational_x64)

Screenshot showing wireless device installed okay in device manager and PE network and error message when clicking Start WiFi

Also attached the log you mentioned to see if it will help

In the meantime I will re-download everything fresh and create a build with no apps or anything and see what happens

Okay I have re-downloaded Win10XPE latest version and also a new 1809 ISO (Win10_1809_EnglishInternational_x64)

Created build using settings as per screenshots with NO Apps selected

Build log attached also

Created and booted USB - Open PE Network Manager - wireless card appears fine, click Start on Wi-Fi tab and still get same error "An error occurred while starting the 'Native Wi-Fi Filter' driver! The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

So really don't know what I am doing differently from you - as using same wi-fi adapter and drivers in a build of PE using ADK and winre.wim and PE Network Manager works fine and I can connect to my wireless network

Please can someone suggest anything else I can try to help us diagnose cause?

Thank you - much appreciated

Was it good with win10 1803 or 1709 ?
in PENMDebug, the Native WiFi Filter service is well started
Code: [Select]
IN: GetServiceStatus: nativewifip: 4 (Running)
IN: "Native WiFi Filter" driver is running
But wlansvc does not start.

Don't know if it is related but I just saw that there are changes on the Network drivers (Wlan) on Win10 1809. I'm going to try to update the NetDrivers registry, now.

Can you try by disabling "Network Driver" in Build Core Plugin and by copying your driver in \Custom\x64\Drivers\
On Win10 1809, you can extract it (with 7zip) from \Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netrtwlanu.inf_amd64_* if it is well this driver.

A WB bug with Alt key (Alt PrtScn).
With Alt key pressed, it is necessary to pass the mouse over all the objects to redraw them.

Has same issue with 1803 source

Will now try what you suggested

Tried disabling "Network Drivers" and adding my drivers in \Custom\x64\Drivers and still same problem
Also tried a different wireless adapter and that gives same error
So it seems problem is to do with wlansvc but not sure why working for others and not me

Okay I have progress and working Wi-Fi

If I build using the settings shown on this screenshot rather than my earlier one it works

So it must mean that enabling / disabling one of the options is the cause of it breaking

Difference between working and not-working settings:-

Microsoft.NET                     CHECKED

Add Windows Installer files (setup.exe)     UNCHECKED
Audio                       UNCHECKED
Msi Windows Installer                 UNCHECKED

I will spend more time tomorrow checking/unchecking each in turn until I can find out which one is causing the problem

UPDATE - can confirm enabling Microsoft.NET checkbox breaks wireless networking and causes errors I had encountered...

Well done, It is good to understand

To make the work easier, I used the full Software hive (from install.wim) if Admin or Microsoft.NET is selected
It's probably related, but it's not going to help us to find out what's going on.
Can you do a new test with Microsoft.NET and also with "Network additions" enabled, to see.

I fixed the "Network drivers" registration with the new DeviceIds of 1809
I will update on the server, without considering this problem, it may take time.
